Sample preparation\, contamination control\, and data management all play a role in producing accurate\, reliable\, and defensible metals data.\n\nThere are several instances where knowledge of how the metals are associated with the host matrix (i.e. soil\, waste rock\, tailings) is key to understanding and predicting short- and long-term impacts. This presentation will explore advancements in sample preparation and instrumental analysis as well as some practical applications of the data.\n \n	\n	\n	\n \n \n Richard Cook\, Specialist Scientist at Knight Piesold and Zahir Jina\, Environment Director at Wyloo\n \n \n \nRichard Cook\, Specialist Scientist at Knight Piesold \nRichard Cook is a Specialist Environmental Scientist at Knight Piésold. He holds multiple designations\, including Environmental Professional (EP)\, and Project Management Professional (PMP) \nPresentation Title: \nThe Hidden Cost of Speed: Why Early Engagement and Robust Studies Pay Off. \nAbstract: \nResource constraints in mining frequently force a narrow focus on achieving immediate shareholder value\, often at the expense of comprehensive environmental understanding and proper project foundation. This creates a fundamental tension: the push for short-term gains frequently undermines a project’s long-term viability and social license to operate. \nRichard and Zahir will detail how specific early exploration activities and studies prove responsible development is not a cost\, but a long-term value driver.  We will present and discuss the critical shift in the industry as proponents become more proactive\, committing funds to meaningful community engagement well before the Preliminary Economic Assessment (PEA) phase. Crucial\, upfront investments are examples that are recognized as the surest path to enhancing overall project quality\, mitigating risk\, and ensuring sustained success. \n \n	\n	\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n\n\n \n \n\n	\n\nEvent Schedule\n7:45 – 8:30 AM – Networking and Sign \n8:30 – 8:45 AM – Welcome Remarks \n8:45 – 9:15 AM – Early Involvement\, Lasting impact!  \nLilli Doughty\, MBA\, Economic Development Specialist\, Wahnapitae First Nation. \n9:15 – 9:45 AM – The Hidden Cost of Speed: Why Early Engagement and Robust Studies Pay Off. \nRichard Cook\, Specialist Scientist at Knight Piesold and Zahir Jina\, Director Environment at Wyloo. \n9:45 – 10:15 AM – Metals Analysis: History\, Challenges and Applications in the Environment. \nRobert Irwin\, Technical Manager\, Inorganic Chemistry at SGS North America. \n10:15 – 10:45 AM – Morning Break & Networking  \n10:45 – 11:15 AM – Water Treatment That Works: A Northern Mine Case Study \nQuinn Pinder\, Area Manager for Northern Ontario with Milestone Environmental Contracting Inc. \n11:15 – 11:45 AM – The New Minerals Recovery Process in Ontario – Permitting Requirements and Case Study. \nByron O’Connor\, VP Mining at Pinchin Ltd and Dixie Ortiz\, BSc (Hons)\, Technical Manager\, Environmental Due Diligence & Remediation at Pinchin Ltd. \n11:45 AM – 12:45 PM – Lunch and Networking \n12:45 – 1:15 PM – PFAS in Mining: Sampling and Analysis – Challenges and Solutions \nTerry Obal\, Specialty Testing Practice Leader\, SGS North America \n1:15 – 1:45 PM – PFAS— Emerging constituents of concern for mine closure studies \nDr. Omar I.
