EtO Update: EPA Proposes Reconsideration for the 2024 Commercial Sterilizer Rule
We aim to keep you informed of any new legislation proposed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on ethylene oxide (EtO) protection. Stepping into 2026, we’re sharing the latest EPA update on EtO for this year.
The EPA is proposing to repeal the 2024 NESHAP rule for ethylene oxide (EtO) sterilization facilities. This reconsideration comes in response to legal, scientific, and policy concerns, particularly around the potential impact the rule could have on the medical supply chain.
EtO is used to sterilize half of all medical devices in the U.S., so the agency is emphasizing the need to maintain a stable domestic supply of critical medical equipment while still protecting public health from unnecessary EtO exposure.
At SGS, we offer EtO analysis using both the TO-15 method with evacuated canisters and the OSHA 1010 method with passive sampling badges, delivering accurate and defensible results for industrial hygienists.
We are proud to have provided routine EtO analytical services for many years, and we remain here to help anyone wanting to take proactive steps to safeguard their workers.
