New AIHA Heat Stress Mobile App 2.0 Expands Protection for Indoor and Outdoor Workers

Last month, we discussed the challenges of high temperatures in schools and how SGS SmartSense technology is helping schools meet new heat regulations. But classrooms aren’t the only places where heat poses a hazard. Across industries, from construction sites to warehouses, manufacturing plants to commercial kitchens, workers face serious heat-related risks, especially in summer.

In May 2025, the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) released a major upgrade to its Heat Stress Mobile App. The new Heat Stress Mobile App 2.0 goes beyond outdoor conditions, incorporating indoor risk factors such as:

  • Indoor temperature and temperature differential
  • Relative humidity
  • Non-solar heat irradiance (e.g., ovens, furnaces)
  • Wind speed
  • Workload intensity
  • Clothing worn

The app allows users to select whether they work indoors or outdoors, tailoring heat stress guidance accordingly. Using the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) index, it delivers real-time heat alerts, rest and hydration recommendations, and quick-access educational resources in multiple languages.

Pairing AIHA’s App with SGS SmartSense for a Complete Heat Risk Solution

While the AIHA Heat Stress Mobile App is a powerful tool for understanding heat risk in the moment, it doesn’t track environmental conditions continuously. That’s where SGS SmartSense comes in.

SmartSense, our real-time environmental monitoring system, can:

  • Continuously track temperature, humidity, and other indoor air quality factors
  • Provide instant alerts when heat thresholds are reached
  • Deliver cloud-based data for proactive decision-making
  • Identify hot spots in facilities before they become safety concerns

By combining real-time SmartSense data with AIHA’s risk assessment and guidance, organizations can both monitor conditions and act quickly to protect employees.

Why Continuous Heat Monitoring Matters

Heat stress isn’t just a summer problem. Indoor work environments with ovens, furnaces, or machinery can generate high heat year-round. Continuous monitoring helps safety teams:

  • Meet OSHA and state-level heat safety guidelines
  • Reduce the risk of heat-related illness
  • Maintain productivity and worker wellbeing
  • Build a record of environmental data to support compliance
