Asbestos Testing Services

Solve Asbestos Challenges with Proven Analytical Expertise

Asbestos remains a major concern in built environments, demolition projects, industrial facilities, and even drinking water infrastructure. Accurately identifying and quantifying asbestos in various media is essential to maintaining compliance with AHERA, NESHAP, and local regulations—and to protecting public and worker health.

Asbestos testing requires labs to provide high quality data without false negatives at high speeds, so selecting the right lab partner is critical.

With more than 30 years of expertise in asbestos analysis, SGS offers specialized testing across air, bulk material, water, and particulate samples. Our services support environmental consultants, industrial hygienists, remediation contractors, and facility managers working to meet strict regulatory requirements.

Expert Methods and Laboratory Accreditations

SGS laboratories are recognized for their precision, speed, and compliance with regulatory standards:

Phase Contrast Microscopy (PCM)

  • Used to determine fiber concentrations in air, this method follows NIOSH 7400 standards (counting rules A for asbestos, B for fiberglass).
  • The PCM lab is AIHA LAP, LLC accredited and actively participates in the Proficiency Analytical Testing (PAT) program.

Polarized Light Microscopy (PLM)

  • Used to analyze bulk building materials and soils for asbestos content, PLM supports NESHAP and California Method 435 requirements.
  • SGS is accredited by NVLAP (Lab Codes 101459-0, 101459-1, 200908-0, 101143-0), NY ELAP, AIHA LAP, LLC, and the California Department of Public Health.

Particle Identification Services

  • Projects involve detailed optical and scanning electron microscopy to evaluate unknown particles, source identification, product testing, and forensic work.
  • Includes soot, char, and ash analysis related to wildfires.

Gravimetry

  • This method removes interfering material (e.g., binders) to prepare samples for low-level asbestos detection.
  • Detection limits down to 0.1% can be achieved, or even lower with greater sample reduction or analysis by TEM.

Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) for Air, Water, and Bulk Materials

  • When low-level detection and structural detail are critical, Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) offers the most sensitive and accurate method for asbestos analysis.
  • SGS provides a full suite of TEM services, including AHERA and Yamate air sample analyses, water testing, and detailed bulk material evaluation supported by decades of experience and multiple accreditations.

AHERA and Yamate Analyses

SGS offers two well-established TEM protocols for analyzing asbestos in air samples:

  • AHERA is the industry standard for post-abatement clearance sampling in U.S. schools. It requires submission of 13 samples and involves counting structures greater than or equal to 0.5 micrometers in length with aspect ratios of 5:1 or more.
  • Yamate protocols, while similar in preparation, use a more inclusive counting approach—identifying all structures with aspect ratios greater than 3:1. This makes them useful for broader environmental applications.

Our TEM laboratory is fully accredited by the National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program (NVLAP Lab Code 101459-0) for the analysis of asbestos in air.

Water Analysis for Asbestos

SGS analyzes water samples for asbestos under protocols that comply with EPA’s National Primary and Secondary Drinking Water Regulations, including EPA Method 100. Whether you’re testing drinking water or wastewater, our laboratory is accredited by the State of California and supplies specialized containers with clear sampling instructions to ensure accurate results.

Bulk Material Evaluation

TEM is also highly effective for analyzing building materials such as floor tiles, roofing tars, and dust. These analyses can be qualitative, semi-quantitative, or fully quantitative depending on project needs.

“Microvac” samples are analyzed quantitatively to determine surface contamination resulting from settling asbestos dust. TEM is an excellent alternative to the exclusive reliance on PLM and may be used when resolution is required to identify asbestos-containing material (ACM) to less than 1%. When PLM results are inconclusive or additional resolution is required, TEM offers unmatched clarity for identifying asbestos-containing materials (ACM) with confidence.
